Samanthas Mann wurde ermordet, jetzt hat sie allen Mut zum Leben verloren. Gerade, als sie sich erschießen will, wird direkt vor ihr ein Kind angefahren, der Fahrer flüchtet. Samantha aber bringt das Kind ins Krankenhaus und trifft da auf ihren Jugendfreund, den vormaligen Knacki und heutigen Sozialarbeiter Joe. Der hat sich auf die Betreuung von Kindern aus desolaten Verhältnissen spezialisiert, und Sam lässt sich von seinem Enthusiasmus anstecken.
