In der quirligen Metropole Montreal genießen die Twentysomethings Francis und Marie das Singleleben. Sie sind cool, aber verletzlich. Er ist intellektuell und schwul, sie scharfzüngig und fordernd. Als sie Nicolas, Typ blonder Rauschgoldengel, auf einer Party treffen, verlieben sich beide in den geheimnisvollen Beau und buhlen um seine Gunst. Das stellt ihre freundschaftliche Beziehung auf eine Zerreißprobe. Ménage à trois und Amour fou treffen sich im zweiten Film des kanadischen Wunderkinds Xavier Dolan. Er tritt hier als Regisseur, Drehbuchautor, Darsteller und Produzent auf. Seine Stilübung zeigt Einflüsse der Nouvelle Vague, von Wong Kar-Wai und Eric Rohmer, aber auch von der Pracht von François Ozon oder der schrillen Farbwelt eines Pedro Almodóvar. Die Dialoge schwanken zwischen Nüchternheit und Poesie, Witz und Bissigkeit. Größeren Wert legt er auf die sehr ästhetische, manchmal schon ästhetisierende Form.

Francis is a young gay man, Marie is a young straight woman and the two of them are best friends -- until the day the gorgeous Nicolas walks into a Montreal coffee shop. The two friends, instantly and equally infatuated, compete for Nicolas' indeterminate affections, a conflict that climaxes when the trio visit the vacation home of Nicolas' mother. The frothy comedy unfolds through narrative, fantasy sequences and confessional monologues.
