Die Krankenhausserie basiert auf den Memoiren von Dr. Eric Manheimer, einem früheren Chefarzt des bekannten Bellevue-Krankenhauses in New York City. Es handelt sich um das älteste öffentliche Krankenhaus Amerikas. Die Hauptfigur der Serie ist der neue Boss des Krankenhauses, Dr. Max Goodwin (gespielt von „The Blacklist“-Veteran Ryan Eggold). Sein Führungsstil rüttelt den Status Quo auf, er kämpft gegen Bürokratie und stellt stets die Pflege der Patienten in den Mittelpunkt.
