Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) und Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) sind geniale Physiker, doch im sozialen Kontakt mit der "normalen" Umwelt hat insbesondere Sheldon so seine Probleme. Gemeinsam bewohnen sie eine WG, in der auch ihre besten Freunde Howard (Simon Helberg) und Raj (Kunal Nayyar) ein- und ausgehen. Nachbarin Penny (Kaley Cuoco) kann mit den merkwürdigen Nerds und ihren Spleens zunächst wenig anfangen, doch bald wächst ihr die Gruppe ans Herz. Nicht verwunderlich ist indes, dass sich Leonard in Penny verliebt - doch wäre es denkbar, dass sich eine hübsche Blondine ausgerechnet für einen melancholischen Intelligenzbolzen entscheiden würde? Sheldon sind solche Gedanken fremd - viel wichtiger ist dem Pedanten, dass niemand auf seinem Platz auf der Couch sitzt. Raj bringt kein Wort heraus, wenn eine Frau in der Nähe ist. Und Howard? Der wohnt noch im Hotel Mama - kein charmantes Hotel. "Bazinga!"

The Big Bang Theory is a comedy about brilliant physicists, Leonard and Sheldon, who are the kind of "beautiful minds" that understand how the universe works. But none of that genius helps them interact with people, especially women. All this begins to change when a free-spirited beauty named Penny moves in next door. Sheldon, Leonard's roommate, is quite content spending his nights playing Klingon Boggle with their socially dysfunctional friends, fellow Cal Tech scientists Wolowitz and Koothrappali. However, Leonard sees in Penny a whole new universe of possibilities... including love.
