Die Serie im Doku-Stil entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit den Machern des Originals, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. Ort des Geschehens ist Scranton, eine Kleinstadt in Pennsylvania. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Angestellten einer Niederlassung des Papiervertreibers „Dunder Mifflin“.
Wie im britischen Vorläufer beobachtet auch hier ein Kamerateam das tägliche Chaos im Großraumbüro und gibt in Interviewsequenzen Einblicke in den privaten und beruflichen Alltag der Mitarbeiter.
