Nach acht Jahren wird er aus der Haft entlassen und nimmt unter neuem Namen in seiner Heimatstadt in der Kirche eine Stelle als Orgelspieler an. Doch noch immer plagen ihn Schuldgefühle. Nach einiger Zeit findet er aber bei der Pastorin Anna und ihrem kleinen Sohn Jens wieder neuen Lebensmut. Eines Tages erkennt ihn Agnes, die Mutter des toten Kindes, wieder. Diese wird, wie Thomas, seit damals von ihren Erinnerungen geplagt.
